A town close to Venice called Mestre

For my parents 35th wedding anniversary we all went together for a cruise around the Greek Islands. The cruise was from Venice to Venice and since it is well known how expensive Venice is, we decided to stay in the next town (10mins away) called Mestre.  If you want to go to Venice but not spend a lot of money on accommodation and be close to Venice,  than Mestre is your place.

We stayed at a hotel called Residence Elite Hotel, a modern hotel, with all the necessities, including a small fitness center. Breakfast was descent which included bread, hams, cheeses, cereals and some sweets. The beds are extremely comfortable for a good night sleep, which will give you the right boost to tour around Mestre or Venice. The hotel is roughly 15 minutes away from the town center on foot.

This town is full of different characteristics with different architectures of both Norman, Gothic and possibly a touch of Baroque, with its main square Piazza Ferretto having different architecture.

On Saturday evening Piazza Ferretto, was the place to be. It was full of life ,people went out to dine and drink. We didn't find much restaurants in the area, there were more pubs and bars with nibbles, rather than restaurants. There were some small stalls with handmade clothing's for sale.  The next day on Sunday morning the atmosphere was different. It was calmer you could hear the sound of teaspoons hitting the mugs as people sip their coffees and those who felt a little more adventoures in the morning had in hand a nice fresh Spritz (also known as Spritz Veneziano).   While walking the streets of Mestre, we could notice how almost each person owned a dog. The cafeterias and restaurants all allowed and welcomed dogs, some also had bowls for them to drink, which was actually a very nice thing to see.

One of the main attractions of Piazza Ferretto is the Torre Civica di Mestre, this tower goes back to the 13th century. The tower is 24 meters high and is the remains of a Fortress.  Later at the end of the 16th century a clock added to the tower. The walls were demolished in the 18th century. Before that this was the entrance to the old village of Mestre.

Mestre is a nice town, you do not need to spend much time in it as there is not that much to see, you can easily cover it in 2 days. However it is a good accommodation place specially if you want to visit other places. There is also a train station which can take you to places like Padova or Veneto, while staying in Mestre.
